hahaist011's Diaryland Diary ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- hbo: an offer you can't refuse dear tony, i wrote a really long entry just for you! it's the previous one. and it occurs to me now that part of what bugs you is that your christian name is associated with so bogus a show. i am so funny. anyhow, i can't get over how influential coppola is. and that as an auteur or whatev he kinda poses a similar problem to um wagner, nietzsche, et cetera. and please don't overlook that i wrote that the problem is "similar." not the--ahem--ramifications or significance of said problem. i think in an interview, tim o'brien talked about the moral and ethical hazards of 'Nam as Absurd...the whole, this war is fucking crazy, so nothing matters thing. i think he feels like it's an easy and seemingly-cool way to evade the always-necessary questions and problems of war. and i think his problem with it all is the same as ours with the sopranos, etc. i swear it is! but it's not coppola's fault? he was just making a couple of really excellent movies (and then, of course, made a coupla sequels to one of them)? and maybe you think i am ignoring kubrick? but i am thinking he doesn't matter so much here. i simply MUST get to some work i'm supposed to be doing. that is, figuring out some more questions for a Directed Reading and Thinking Activity (DRTA) for "Sonny's Blues." all the same, doesn't it seem very very possible that hbo will make a show about soliders in Nam who don't give a fuck? a show that has them smoking drugs and blown up by VC babies? a show that never acknowledges its debt (by being careful to bury the idea of napalm smelling like anything)? or maybe they'll make it about irag with that wicked meth-style pro-vigil drug and al-quada babies?
