hahaist011's Diaryland Diary ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- no entry left behind nate said _Freakonomics_ is crap, and that's pretty much completely true. i don't know if i'm so worried about the ideas being un-proveable. i never worry about that, i guess. it's more important to me that L and D(ubner) don't follow their own rules about following the trail of Incentives. the chapter on education is particularly frustrating. L and D take it for granted that standardized tests are an adequate measure of education. which seems really fucking stupid. it may be more an error in the writing of the results, but it makes the chapter completely worthless as an analysis. i guess i'm one of those who want to leave some children behind. never forget, though, that stephen dubner wrote two books that made for one of the most delightful surprises EVER. first, _Turbulent Souls_: kid raised a devout catholic finds out his parents were jewish! sweeeeeet! and then _Confessions of a Hero Worshipper_ in which dubner considers the phenomenon of media heroes blah blah blah through his own worship of FRANCO HARRIS! myron cope is in it! talli sent me both one day. i fainted. 8:05 p.m. - 2007-09-26 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
